PEACE BY PIECE

MAKING

The theme of the wall hanging will involve participants in recollection, research and interpretation of life and experience on the Home Front during 1939 to 1945 and will present this creatively using rag-rug making techniques, which were a traditional craft of the period.

The traditional collection of material for re-use to make rag-rugs gave a particular character to the work. Recycling materials for use in this project will recall that spirit of make do and mend in conjunction with modern environmental concerns. It is now possible to use dyes with fabrics and create designs that are more striking.

In the past, rag-rug making was often a shared activity within a family. Sharing work in progress, sessions will bring everyone together and also share ideas and materials.

The hanging will use a flexible design to accommodate the final number of pieces. The artist will work with up to 10 groups, each producing a number of rag-rug pieces depending on their time and ability.
